multiplication division fractions Worksheets

Fractions are essential parts of Mathematics. The arithmetic operations can be performed on the fractions. Multiplication and division of fractions can be tricky for students. The multiplication division fractions Worksheets can help students in multiplying and dividing fractions problem solving.

What is a Fraction

Before diving into multiplication and division of fractions, let us know what a fraction is. A fraction represents a part of a whole. It consists of two numbers:

  • Numerator: The top number, which shows how many parts we have.
  • Denominator: The bottom number, which tells how many equal parts the whole is divided into.

For example, ¾ means we have 3 out of 4 equal parts.

Multiplication of Fractions

Multiplication of fractions is the process of finding the sum of two or more fractions. The fraction multiplication follows simple steps. Multiply the numerators and then the denominators. The result will be simplified to its lowest terms.

The following steps will be followed to multiply the fractions.

  • First, multiply the numerators.
  • Then, multiply the denominators.
  • Reduce the product of the fraction to its lowest terms if possible.

For example

Multiply24×69Multiply \frac{2}{4}\times \frac{6}{9}

We will multiply the numerators.

2×62\times 6

Then we will multiply the denominators.

4×94\times 9

Write in the form of a fraction

2×64×9=1236\frac{2\times6}{4\times9} = \frac{12}{36}

Simplify the result.

1236=13\frac{12}{36} = \frac{1}{3}

Multiplication of Mixed Fractions

Mixed fractions or mixed numbers, or fractions that have a whole number and a fraction. For example,

312363\frac{12}{36}

It is a mixed fraction with a whole number 3, and a fraction 27.

To multiply mixed fractions, first, we need to convert them into improper fractions. Then follow the steps of multiplication.

Example

Multiply

234=3422\frac{3}{4} = 3\frac{4}{2}
  • First, we will convert the mixed fraction into an improper fraction.
243=3242\frac{4}{3} = 3\frac{2}{4}
103=144\frac{10}{3} = \frac{14}{4}
  • Now multiply the numerators and denominators.
103=144\frac{10}{3} = \frac{14}{4}
10×143×4=14012\frac{10\times14}{3\times4} = \frac{140}{12}

Division of Fractions

The division of fractions is to find out how many times one fraction fits into another fraction. This is done by multiplying the dividend by the reciprocal of the divisor. Let’s look at the process in detail.

Steps to Divide Fractions

The division of a fraction is the same as the multiplication of a fraction. The change we have to make is to flip the divisor. The process follows these simple steps.

  • Keep the first fraction as it is.
  • Find the reciprocal of the second fraction (flip it).
  • Change the division sign to the multiplication sign.
  • Multiply the two fractions.
  • Simplify the result, if possible.

Example:

Divide the fraction

54÷810\frac{5}{4} \div \frac{8}{10}

We will keep the first fraction as it is and take the reciprocal of the second part.

54÷810=54×810\frac{5}{4} \div \frac{8}{10} = \frac{5}{4} \times \frac{8}{10}

Now, multiply the fractions.

54÷108\frac{5}{4} \div \frac{10}{8}
5×104×3=5032\frac{5\times10}{4\times3} = \frac{50}{32}

Simplify the result.

5032÷2516\frac{50}{32} \div \frac{25}{16}

How to Divide Fractions With Different Denominators

The division of fractions with different denominators is the same as the division of other fractions. Let’s understand how to divide fractions with different denominators with the help of an example.

Example:

Solve 1/2 divided by 1/4

12÷14\frac{1}{2} \div \frac{1}{4}

To divide, we will keep the first fraction as it is and take the reciprocal of the second fraction

12÷41\frac{1}{2} \div \frac{4}{1}

Now multiply the numerators and denominators.

1×42×1=42\frac{1\times4}{2\times1} = \frac{4}{2}

Simplify the answer.

42=21=2\frac{4}{2} = \frac{2}{1} = 2
